Erin's first book, a memoir, When Quietness Came: A Neuroscientist’s Personal Journey With Schizophrenia tells her personal story, one that included 14 hospitalizations with schizophrenia. Ultimately, through her personal strength and modern medications, she achieved wellness, and the book is, in the end, a story of hope.

When Quietness Came provides a personal and illuminating view, one that combines insights from her professional training in neuroscience, with her lived experiences. It is also a call for better understanding and empathy for those who face mental health challenges.

Over the years Erin shared her story directly with thousands through appearances at classes, support groups, conferences and events. See this listing of some of these appearances.

Despite her many hospitalizations, Erin completed an honours undergraduate degree as well as an M.Sc. in neuroscience.

Emiru is a peer support worker with Vancouver Coastal Health’s Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) team and brings her own experience in helping people living through mental health and addictions challenges.
